Five Free July “Learn to Swim” Seminars

Under the supervision of Stingray Swim Club’s past president, Terry Hora, the US Masters’ Adult Learn To Swim Month of April became a reality here in Huntley. For five of the month’s Wednesdays, Terry and his entourage of club instructors guided six residents who expressed a desire to learn the basics of swimming.

Sun City resident people’s choice winner

Linda Carney’s painting of a 1920 image of Huntley’s first school bus was the People’s Choice winner in a recent Huntley history art contest. Carney, of Sun City Huntley, won $100 for having created the most popular artwork.

Huntley firefighters ‘fill the boot’

Members of the Huntley Firefighters Union Local #4106 and Huntley Fire Protection District, along with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, celebrated their 60-year partnership and kicked off the fire fighters’ annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to benefit children and adults affected by muscle disease throughout the Huntley area.

For over 10 years, over 500 Easter baskets have been specially made and given to children in need. Easter is a sign of hope, and I felt an Easter basket for a child would give them hope for a better year.

A few weeks ago, a number of community minded Sun City residents experienced what appeared to be one of those rare communal issues or, at least, what had the making of an issue. Word got out that changes in staffing resulted in the loss of a long time employee followed by another rumor that a second staff member likewise was amongst the unemployed, followed by yet another report that a third staff member resigned his position.

The Polish American Club presented a bountiful St. Joseph’s Table before their March 17 meeting. Members provided a variety of tasty foods.

On Jan. 12, five Stingray Swim Club members rose early on a crisp Sunday morning. Their goal was to participate in the first Masters swim meet of 2014, held at the Des Plaines Lattof YMCA. The Sun City tankers were comprised of Terry Hora, Nancy Moore, Mark Schark, Joan Souchek, and Joanie Koplos.

On Jan. 31, the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Horse, neighbors in Monarch Ridge gathered to have a fun time playing trivia. Trivia is derived from the Roman days, meaning a place where three roads meet.

A $6,000 donation was made to the Northern Illinois Food Bank from the ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) unit 239, and in addition, $2,100 was donated to the Grafton Food Pantry collected through the Sun City Bridge Club by our club member Mary Belcher.

The Breast Cancer Support Hour celebrated the holiday with their annual gathering at the home of member Elizabeth Anderson. A short meeting was held to announce the date of the next “You’re Not Alone” 5K Cancer Walk which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014.
