MY SUN DAY NEWS
Jim Sanecki, Sun City Board Treasurer, presented the Fiscal Year 2022 year-end financial statements at the January board meeting.
The holiday feared by most red-blooded American men is rapidly approaching. Iâm not talking about anniversaries, the wifeâs birthday, or Sweetest Day. Iâm talking about the holiday with the most pressure and angst of all: Valentineâs Day. Nancy does not appreciate flowers, she will not allow me to cook in her kitchen since I burned up the microwave handle, and chocolates are a âno-noâ in keeping with her New Yearâs resolution. After much contemplation, I thought of a relatively new restaurant where I can get a good steak, save a few bucks, and have a Valentineâs dinner with my better half. I whisked my sweetie off to the Longhorn Steakhouse in Algonquin. Cupidâs got nothing on me.
As we enter the bleak midwinter (at least mid by Chicagoland standards), my task of searching out good romantic content for this review has been daunting. It took me a while to come to the conclusion you see before you. Maybe it was the lack of love in my own life but perhaps the absolute dreck studio and steaming services have on hand. Every time an ad for Shotgun Wedding came on, my eye rolls became a sort of neurological tick. Upon looking at my rack of Blu-rays, a spark reminded me what made be fall in love with love stories in the first place. Here are some older and possibly overlooked gems for your V-day viewing.
My wife has some memory issues that are beginning to evolve. Her mother had Alzheimerâs disease and lived to her upper 90s. My wife is 86 years old and Iâm approaching my 90th birthday. Weâre managing life okay, although I do have my health concerns. While I love my wife, caring for her is starting to exhaust me.

Sun City resident Karen Semancik portrays the places she loves in fabric and stitching. Her experiments in art quilting began in 1989 after she retired from teaching and moved to Sun City. Semancik said, âOne of my neighbors encouraged me to attend a Quilt Guild meeting. I was wowed by all the beautiful quilts that the members had made. I decided to give it a try.â

January of every year brings any number of requisite stories on the preceding year. My Sun Day News contacted Huntley Village Manager David Johnson about some 2022 projects that have yet to conclude.
The new Lincoln House and Co. Wine and Coffee Bar may soon be coming to the former Mannyâs Gelato location on Main Street. The owners of the Lincoln Farmstead are the contract purchases of the building at 11808 Main Street.
Not long ago, I did something nice for a lady who was a total stranger, and my friend said to me: âThat was very Christian of you.â I donât remember what I did for that stranger â it was some little kindness any thoughtful person would do for another. Maybe she dropped a dollar and I called out to her. Or maybe she struggled with an armful of groceries and I offered to carry some out to her car. It was some kindness so small and commonplace, I donât recall it.

It was my favorite kind of date night. My Gentleman Friend asked me if I wanted to go out to see a movie, A Man Called Otto. It was Sunday night, which made going out feel a little rebellious. We were going to squeeze just a little bit more âus timeâ out of the weekend.
The Duke Realty Corporation requested approval by the Village Planning Commission for a 40,000 square foot industrial building located at the Southwest corner of Freeman Road and Weber Drive. The location is adjacent to the Weber Global Distribution facility.
So just how successful are New Year’s resolutions? According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the tradition dates back more than 4,000 years. However, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology states: One report of as few as 9 percent of U.S. people achieve their goals by year’s end. Though a few researchers, who in recent times conducted studies on the subject, have discovered more optimistic outcomes.
January is such a wonderful month. You wake up, open your blinds, and you think you are looking at an old black and white television screen. This is punctuated by fits of snow, freezing rain, and dense fog all in the same day. So far, 2023 isnât looking very âbright.â
The term animation comes from the Latin to mean a bestowing of life. It, primarily, used to mean vivacity or liveliness more than anything. Certainly, its use predates the entertainment medium which it describes. Many here in the United States view moving drawings as the domain of children. Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse, that is not true art. Adults canât enjoy this, scoff the purveyors of good taste.
Signs of support for the families of two Huntley families whose students are battling cancers, Lucas Gidelski and Madison Roberts, were seen throughout the schoolâs gym area Friday. The event was a first Duck Toss Fundraiser but it ran deeper than kids tossing plastic ducks.
A few months ago, I needed to make some difficult medical decisions for my mother as her health declined. It was disheartening and Iâve carried some guilt because of it. My husband and I donât want our children to be burdened with similar decisions. We are meeting with our lawyer to revisit our will and trust so that our children have a road map to follow. That being said, Iâm having a difficult time grasping the difference between hospice care and palliative care.
Riding around Sun City and walking through the lodge, chances are you will see some of the work and constructed items completed by members of the Sun City Woodchucks Charter Club. The Charter club started in 1999, with its first president, Jim Barron. Barron said, âWe had a sign-up sheet in the Library at Prairie Lodge, for anyone interested in joining the club. The woodshop was not even constructed at the time.â

Itâs 2023, but unfortunately, I must start on a sad note. Shortly before Christmas, I learned that My Sun Day News lost one of its own with the passing of Larry Feldman. Many people inside this media didnât really know Larry. In fact, I didnât work with Larry very often, as he was under the management of our former Advertising Manager Kurt Kuehnert. Despite Larryâs soft presence in this media company, he was never overlooked by those who did know and work with him.

Depending on how long youâve lived in Edgewater, some of you may remember us! You may have even wrote for us or appeared in our pages. Throughout 2013, My Sun Day News (then called the Sun Day) delivered to and covered the Edgewater community. We were well received by residents and other interested readers in the area, but the timing wasnât right and we had to return our focus to the Sun City community in Huntley, which weâve successfully covered since April of 2010.

There is a story thatâs become legend in our family: itâs about the day we took money from our babyâs piggy bank to buy groceries. We had just moved halfway across the country from Illinois to Colorado. Our first son was just a toddler. I was primarily a stay-at-home mom, doing some freelance work on the side; my husband taught music to middle school kids in a small town situated in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains.

When you watch a documentary on Netflix, you expect to learn a lot of things about people you donât know. What you donât expect to learn is that an old friend of yours has died. Thatâs what happened when I watched the Netflix documentary âSr.â created by actor Robert Downey Jr as he interviews his father, filmmaker Robert Downey Sr, over a period of about three years.

The Housing for Older Persons Act (HOPA) was discussed in Sun City since September, 2022. Uncertainty and speculation about HOPA caused concern among residents. Many questions, claims, and counter-claims arose after the December 14, 2022, edition of My Sun Day News was delivered. The following was discovered after future research by My Sun Day News.
The Huntley Village board approved video gaming licenses for six new video gaming terminals at the Pinecrest Golf Club. The video gaming terminals would be located in one corner of the restaurant and within the line of sight of the bartenders. The required $500 per machine, or $3,000 total, has been received by the village and deposited. An application for a video gaming operator license was submitted by J&J Ventures Gaming, LLC of Effingham, Illinois.
The Sun City Board held their first meeting of 2023 on January 4th and welcomed three new board members. Bill Niemasz, Jim Sanecki and Al Brewer all began their first terms on the Board.
Well, I hope all had a good holiday and a happy new year. As we careen head-first into our resolutions maybe we should take this time for some reflection. What do you want out of our time here? To be perfectly honest, 2022 was a lot for me. Some films currently in theaters I have avoided due to personal reasons. Amazing as I have heard Brendan Fraserâs performance is in The Whale, the idea of it is still too raw for me. Same goes for Spoiler Alert. A great many filmmakers mine their own lives and history for their art. Here are a few that affected me during the break.
A friend and his family finally accomplished a lifelong dream – swimming with pigs. What? Not your cup of tea? Well, you have to understand the background.
Hollywood has the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. Broadway has their Tony Awards and music has the Grammy Awards. The food industry has the James Beard Awards and the Michelin Stars. All of these pale in comparison to the most prestigious, most sought after, and coveted award ever. Of course, we are referring to the annual Dining Duoâs B.E.L.C.H. Award (Best Eating Location Close to Huntley).
Letters for the week of January 12.
