MY SUN DAY NEWS
It’s the Sunday before Halloween. Front porch lights throughout Sun City Huntley are turned on. It’s the signal that your house is open for business. You’ll welcome trick-or-treating children from nearby schools and neighborhoods, as well as the grandkids of Sun City residents. Ring the bell! We have candy and snacks for you. Or, maybe, homemade cookies or bags of freshly popped popcorn for every super hero, princess or scary ghost that comes calling.

Bob Ruckoldt confirms that there are actual winners in those contests you see on Facebook.
His sister-in-law, Charmaine Ruckoldt, won the 2018 Chicago Blackhawks Custom Camaro Convertible with a 455 Hp V8 Engine. Charmaine tells the secret of success.
“My daughter enters and wins contests all the time and calls me to enter them also. That’s what happened on this one. It was on Facebook and I entered and won,” he said.
With 2017-2018’s past flu season having been proclaimed “This Flu Season Is the Worst in Nearly a Decade” by the New York Times, many Americans have begun bunkering down to get their annual influenza shots early this 2018-2019 winter. Television’s Channel 41 issued a rather sobering statement about the past years’ dire flu statistics in America: “Every 12 minutes someone over 65 plus has the possibility of dying of complications of the flu.”
I care for my elderly parents and often neglect taking care of myself. While I prepare healthy meals for them, I don’t often take the same interest in my own diet because I am on the go so often. I’d appreciate any motivation you can give me to better my current habits.
Five new 30-second public service announcements aimed to help teenagers in crisis are airing periodically on Huntley Community Radio WHRU-LP 101.5 FM as a result of a project assigned to a group of English students from Marlowe Middle School by their teacher, Megan Brickey.
We decided to go all out for Jim’s “Last Supper” before he goes “under the knife” once again. He is turning into a living “Operation Game.” The doctor replaced his knee and the buzzer went off, WRONG!!! Now, the hip doctor is giving it a try with a back surgeon waiting in the wings. Jim is turning into the bionic food critic. He felt he needed a good steak before surgery, so we thought we’d give Addison’s Steakhouse in McHenry a try.
As many Sun City residents pack for warmer climates, it is important to spend an hour or so to get your house ready for winter. When you are going to be away for a week or more, you should prepare your home so there will be no surprises on your return.
Swedish author Stieg Larsson died in November 2004. It took several years for his phenomenally successful trilogy about an unusual young woman named Lisbeth Salander to be published. The books sold 60 million copies posthumously. Lisbeth became an icon to those of us who could not put those books down. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl who Played with Fire, and The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, were made into films and went on to gross over $700 million worldwide.
Letters for the week of November 15.
Sun City’s own Relay for Life team secured two tickets to the National Golf Club Practice Rounds on April 9, 2019. Bob Ibach, a member of the Relay team and a cancer survivor, got the tickets for the Cancer Relay for Life fundraiser.

Quick now, Sun Citians, what is a “coastie?” Chances are, you have to think awhile before you answer. Right now, there are nearly 50,000 men and women in the nation that have this title. They are members of the United States Coast Guard, one of the active branches of the country’s armed forces. In this year 2018, Coasties, this story is published for you, as we approach Veterans Day on November 11.

Six text messages. Twenty emails from myriad companies. Notices from Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. These are just some of the many ways in which I’ve been inundated in the past month with the timeliest question: Have you registered to vote yet?

Go ahead, call me a Luddite. It’s not true. Or… well… it’s not completely true. Not anymore.

The proposed 2019 master and APN operating budgets will be published on the community’s website and in Lifestyles Magazine this week. If approved by the board in December, the budgets will require a $2.00 increase in resident assessments effective on January 1. This would increase assessments from $125 per month to $127 for single-family homeowners.
A potato farmer hired a young man to help him with the harvest. After dumping a truckload of potatoes in the barn, he asked him to sort them into three piles, one for large, one for medium sized and the third for smaller ones. The lad said, “fine, that shouldn’t be too hard.” After an hour or so the farmer decided to check back and see how the new helper was doing. He walked into the barn and found him curled up in a fetal position on the floor. Angered at the scene he found, the farmer spoke harshly to the young man, “what’s going on, I thought you said this job shouldn’t be too hard.” “The work isn’t too hard he replied, it’s those decisions that are killing me.”
In addition to being a convenience and time-saver, driving can also make social or critically needed medical appointments happen. It is definitely a show of independence as one ages. A feeling of loss of self-worth can often occur when “hanging up the keys.” Jonathan Adkins, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, explains: “Being 75 isn’t what it used to be because people are more active and live longer than previous generations.” He continues, “We want to get away from the idea of taking away mom and dad’s keys and focus on other alternatives to keep them mobile … if they could be driving safely.”

Question for $400: He was a pilot, then a pastor. He moved to the U.S. from Korea. And most recently, his grandson will be competing on Jeopardy in November. If you answered, “Who is Peter Cho?” then you would be correct.

Each year in the fall I spend a day making homemade Christmas gifts. It is a day that I treasure and hopefully brings some joy to the recipients at the holidays. Throughout the years, the gifts and the recipients have varied. One year it was canned pears for all of the adults who were influential in my children’s lives.
My father has dementia and is constantly fidgeting and moving things around in his house. This upsets my mom because she feels like she must keep him settled but can’t. What can I do to help them at this time in their lives?
Before Nancy and I moved to the sunny confines of Sun City, we lived in Hoffman Estates, which is basically a suburb of Schaumburg. Our days living there included a lot of fond memories, such as when our son played basketball for a church league that was coached by one of my high school buddies. He coincidentally now also lives in Del Webb. After the games, the whole team would often go to a local haunt and “lick their wounds” over a big pepperoni pizza. We decided to revisit this haunt and “go back home” to Riccardo’s Ristorante in Schaumburg.
Have you ever had a personal encounter with perfection? Card games can (very) occasionally provide you with a “perfect” experience. Take cribbage, for instance. A “perfect” five-card hand in this game is very special, especially since it is literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for only a few people. Pat Pogreba, a three-year Sun City resident, had such a happy moment on October 10.

This column was not written to tell you when to replace your furnace and air conditioner, but rather to tell you how I decided and let you gather facts to make a decision that fits your needs. Replacing a furnace is usually done with different criteria than replacing your car.

On page 2 of the October 18 issue of the Sun Day, a brief item entitled, “ballot confusion” was printed. It reported that on the Kane County ballot in the upcoming Nov. 6 election, there is a proposal for a 1% property tax increase on the fair market value of homes in the county. A majority of Sun City residents live in Kane County.

Sun City Neighborhood 28 continues to “give back” to the community with recent fundraisers. An October food drive raised over $1830 and 18 bags/boxes of food items for the Grafton Township Food Pantry.
Ed Slomski, a Sun City resident, had an idea more than 55 years ago that, odds are, you have used in your life time and is still prominent in kitchens and the throughout the food and beverage market today. In 1963, the now defunct American Can Company (Barrington, IL) hired Slomski, as a Development Engineer in their Research and Development Department, and quickly put him to work on a problem they were having a hard time solving.

To find life, you have to face death. Okay, I’m being dramatic, but what can you expect from someone who recently had the top of his head cut open and his guts spooned out and cooked? No, I’m not some vile science experiment (unless you call being worked on by a kid with a serrated knife science…uhhh, wait). What I am is a jack-o’-lantern. And my name is, you guessed it, Jack. You can save the grins. That’s my job. It’s my only job. To grin.

I don’t have an Alexa living in my house, but I know several people who do, and whenever I visit them I always come away feeling a bit uncomfortable. I recently went to a family barbecue at a house with an Alexa in the kitchen, and every time somebody asked Alexa a question, my cousin Rich bristled. “I don’t like those things,” he said. “I don’t want The Man listening to everything I say.” And then he sat sphynx-like at the table, refusing to open his mouth as the rest of us chatted. Alexa just sat and listened, her little lights glowing invitingly, despite Rich’s scowling at her whenever she did anybody’s bidding.

The Sun City Theatre Company proudly presents “South Pacific,” coming to the Drendel Ballroom for performances November 15-18. The musical, scored by iconic singer/songwriter duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, is based on a collection of Pulitzer Prize-winning short stories by author James Michener. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1949, and has remained a beloved musical ever since, followed by a Hollywood release film in 1958 and many of the songs, such as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There is Nothing Like a Dame,” and “I’m Gonna Wash that Man Right Outa My Hair” earning their place as popular standards still played today.
John and Arlene Angerame are a tour de force, at least when it comes to Chicago. “We have been doing tours for 7 or 8 years,” said John. The Sun City couple leads historical and literature-based excursions around Chicago. Most recently, they held a “Devil in the White City” tour based on the book by Erik Larsson. The book tells the tale of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 and the exploits of serial murderer Dr. Henry H. Holmes.
