An Evening in Italy

Senior service organization Faith in Action of McHenry County (FIAMC) is pleased to host its annual benefit dinner An Evening in Italy on Saturday, April 2. This year’s event has been moved from its traditional January time and also is being held at a new, larger venue D’Andrea Banquets, 4419 US Hwy 14, Crystal Lake.

A social hour and silent auction will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner following at 7 p.m. The evening will also include a Pretty Purse Purchase and Raffle (Purchase a purse for $35 and be entered to win a beautiful piece of fine jewelry from Steffan’s Jewelers, McHenry) and a raffle drawing for a two-night, three-day stay at a lakefront Chicago condominium. The cost for the Chicago Condo raffle tickets is $10 each or three for $25.

Evening in Italy is Faith in Action’s major fundraising event of the year. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever with entertainment provided by Crystal Brass.

Tickets may be purchased for $40, and sponsorships for the evening are also available. Silent Auction items are also needed. Please contact the FIAMC offices at 815-455-3120 to purchase tickets or to donate a silent auction item.


Rules of the Road Class

The Rules of the Road Review Course is designed to give drivers – especially senior citizens and persons with disabilities – the knowledge and confidence needed to renew or obtain a driver’s license.  The review course combines an explanation of the driving exam with a practice written exam. This program is being coordinated by the Lifestyle Department Civics Committee.

Tuesday, April 12: 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Course is free, but reservations are required at the CAM desk.  Walk-ins are accommodated, as space allows.

Filling up on vintage gas stations

At 2 p.m. Monday, March 28, Wisconsin architectural historian Jim Draeger will speak at the McHenry County Historical Society Museum (located 6422 Main Street in Union). As author of the book Great Old Wisconsin Gas Stations, Draeger takes a look at vintage gas stations as icons of architecture, economics, and pop culture.

This presentation is the second of four “Sampler” lectures offered by the historical society. Now into its twenty-fith year, the 2011 sampler Lecture Series focuses on the topic, “Built By the Auto: Roadside Architecture.”

Draeger is an architectural historian with the Wisconsin Historical Society with more than twenty years of historic presentation experience. From roadside architecture to North Woods resorts, Draeger celebrates the importance of ordinary buildings to our daily lives through his research, writing, and lectures. His book on Wisconsin gas stations will be available for sale at the lecture. Draeger’s second co-authored book titled Bottom’s Up: a toast to Wisconsin’s Historic Taverns and Breweries will be published in August, 2012.

Sampler Series lectures are $10. The four-part series runs $35 or $30 for McHenry County Historical Society Members. The remaining two lectures will be on April 4 and April 11.

Lights! Camera! Action!

Tickets are now on sale for the Prairie Singers annual spring concert. The Prairie Singers Present Cine-Music premiers at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at the Huntley High School Performing Arts Center on Harmony Road in Huntley. 

The program includes favorite songs from box office hits like Grease, Aladdin, Casablanca, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.  A dynamic four-piece instrumental combo and the Sun Tones will add their talents to the show.

Admission is $10 for adults and $3 for children 2-12 years old.  Tickets are sold daily in the Huntley branches of Castle Bank, Citizens Bank, and Harris Bank and at Prairie Lodge in Sun City per posted schedule.

What’s all this “Nunsense” about?

The Theatre Company of Sun City presents Dan Groggin’s musical Comedy Nunsense on April 7, 8, 9, at 7 p.m., April 10 at 1:30 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom at the Prairie Lodge in Sun City. Sun City Lions Annual Pasta Dinner

The Sun City Huntley Lions Club will hold their Eighth Annual Pasta Dinner on Wednesday, April 13 at Huntley High School from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner cost is the same as last year: $8 for Adults, $7 for Seniors.

Proceeds will go to support the Lions charitable activities in the community.

New this year will be entertainment by the trio “Me and My Friend(s),” featuring Carolyn Kleen, Karen Landis, and Marsha Kapchinski.

In addition to new tunes, they will reprise some of their “Andrews Sister” selections from their last appearance at the Sun City Idols Encore show.

Dinner will include salad, garlic bread, mostaccioli, meatballs, ice cream, cookies, coffee, lemonade or milk. Tickets are available by calling 847-669-3933 or at the door.

US Constitution refresher

Would you like to have a “refresher” course on the Constitution?  Please join the Huntley Constitution Study Group on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month for review and discussion of the U.S. Constitution, held at the PNC Bank, Rt. 47 just south of Regency Square Parkway, next to Culver’s.  The community room entrance is at the back of the bank building.  The meeting begins promptly at 10 a.m. until noon.  We use the Hillsdale College DVD as reference, with additional study materials available for purchase.  For more info please contact catherine42@comcast.net.
