The Boys of Summer return to the Senior Olympics

By Glenn Groebli

On the morning of July 8, the Sun City Clippers (age group 70+) and Sun City Bushwhacker’s (age group 60+) left the friendly confines of Eakin Field to once again compete in the Six County Senior Olympics softball tournament held each year in Elk Grove. Both teams were sponsor by Chris’ Lawn Care Service. The 70s were managed by Glenn Groebli and the 60s were managed by Gary Krewer.

The Sun City Clippers, looking for their fourth (4th) Gold medal in five years, knew their opponent’s from previous years, and knew that in order to get the gold, they had to play at a high level. They drew the Elk Grove team first and by scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning went on to win 5-2 and move on to the Championship Game with a tough Villa Park team, who defeated the Clippers last year by a score of 1-0 to win last year’s championship.

But this was a different year and the Clippers wanted to revenge last year’s loss and succeeded by soundly defeating the Villa Park team by a score of 8-2 and winning the Gold Medal. The entire team had a hand in contributing to our wins. The team consisted of Ron Tenggren, Frank Yacono, Bill Gagne, Jack Sietsema, Mike Burns, Wayne Markett, Fred Thomas, Ed Fabro, Tom Bischoffer, Bruce Schweizer, Joe Mastrangelo & Howard Matthews.

The 60 year old Senior Olympic softball team the Bushwhacker’s won the Silver Medal at the Six County Senior Olympics. 13 players from various teams in the Sun City PM League won its first two games, then lost the championship game to a very good Mavericks team from Elk Grove Village. The Bushwhacker’s beat the Mavericks last year to win the Gold Medal.

Members of the team were: Fred Dryden, Norm Richter, Brian Schroeder (Mgr), John Roccosanto, Chuck Chodl, Fred Miller, Steve Sawatski, Steve Kutska, Bob Langham, Jim Weiss, Gary Krewer (Mgr), Jim Torsiello, Mark Renie, Ralph Voyta and Jeff Gatti.

As always, fans from Sun City drove to Elk Grove to support the Sun City Softball teams.
