Board discusses maintenance, advisory committees

By Dwight Esau

After making several important decisions about large maintenance projects in recent months, the Sun City board of directors conducted one of its shortest meetings of the year on October 5.

Here are sound bite-style reports on actions taken at this Committee of the Whole (COTW) meeting:

First, the board accepted and directed the publishing of the proposed 2017 operating and reserve budgets. It was prepared by board representatives and the staff over a 3-4 month period earlier this year. In the next few weeks, residents will get a chance to read the budget documents and attend town meeting-style meetings to ask questions and make comments.

Second, the board hired a new investment management firm for 2017 at a cost of $24,500. The chosen organization is Great Lakes Advisors, a part of the Wintrust Group. Next, the board authorized the printing and distribution of an updated Resident Handbook and Telephone Directory. Cost is $9,466.

The winning proposal was one of four reviewed by the board and staff. This project took a significant amount of extra time to prepare because of the high turnover among residents since the last book was published in 2014. The book will be completed and distributed early next year.

Finally, the board discussed, but made no decisions, on the process to be used in forming and updating goals, objectives, and purposes for its advisory committees. The committees are Covenants/Compliance, Facility, Finance, Elections, Fitness, Golf, and Modifications.

The board’s next regular monthly meeting will be on a new date, October 26, at 1 p.m. in Drendel Ballroom. COTW meetings are held at 9 a.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. Formal meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. in Drendel.
