Having worked for the Village of Huntley since July 2006, Executive Assistant/Special Events Manager Barb Read is set to conclude this chapter in her life in preparation for retirement come mid-January. “My family is spread over three states and this grandma just wants to spend more time with my kids and grandkids. I have worked for municipalities for about 28 years and full-time totally for 44 years — it is time,” Read told My Huntley News.

At the Jan. 11 Village Board meeting, trustees unanimously approved all consent agenda line items including an ordinance that will amend Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Restrictions for traffic on Hennig Road.
According to the Village Board meeting agenda summary for line item 5.8, the Village Board previously approved Ordinance (O) 2022-04.21, which updated truck weight roadway restrictions throughout Huntley. Before the approval of that ordinance, a limited number of roadways had posted weight restrictions, with the remaining roadways being labeled as “undesignated” or having had a 12,000 pounds or less GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Restriction).
A new racquet sport, padel, is gaining popularity and is taking the title of the US’s fastest-growing sport. It was invented by the Mexican industrialist Enrique Corcuera. Padel blends racket games with elements of tennis, racquetball, and squash.
There are over 25 million active padel players in over 170 countries.
With the new year the scammers are out with a new batch of scams designed to take your money or your personal and financial information. They contact you by email, text message, or phone. They can easily disguise their caller ID, so don’t believe what you see.
McHenry County Treasurer Donna Kurtz is launching a series of presentations countywide to explain and promote the Senior Real Estate Tax Deferral Program, which offers tax relief for qualified senior citizens.
Last year, on August 30, 2023, at a Sun City Softball game, one of the players, Dave Rodiek, collapsed. Laurie Pokorny, watching the game, said, “I remember it being a beautiful day, with the bleachers packed with fans for both teams. The teams got one inning in, and then, before they could start the second inning, Dave collapsed in the dugout.”

After the New Year’s celebrations wrap up, many will make their resolutions for 2024. In Sun City, many opportunities for volunteerism are available. The Sun City Sew N Sews charter club has groups that provide community and worldwide services. In 2023, one of the club groups, Sun City Project Linus, reached a milestone to celebrate.
Sun City Residents Sue and Ed Birth are proud of their son, Eddy, who is coming into his own as a singer-songwriter. Sue said, “We have a talented singer-songwriter son. He has an EP and two albums to his credit. Eddy releases a new song every five weeks for his next album. He writes all the music and lyrics for his original portfolio of over 100 songs. Eddy performs regularly in Madison, Chicago, and the tri-cities. He plays guitar, harmonica, piano, accordion, theremin, ukulele, and pretty much any instrument he picks up. His musical story is amazing.”

For the past several months the headlines have heralded the news about weight loss drugs containing semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy). Their popularity has skyrocketed being featured on tv and the internet with endorsements by doctors and celebrities. As one local pharmacist I spoke with said Wegovy is “flying off the shelves.”

The elaborate, cookie-walled houses, decorated with icing and a variety of sweets, became associated with Christmas tradition. Gingerbread houses also became popular with the Brothers Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel. They find a house made entirely of treats deep in the forest.

For Sun City resident Nedra Reeves, the hills are alive with the sound of Christmas this year. Reading about book clubs online, she came across clear ornaments filled with miniatures of books. She started making a unique ornament for her granddaughter to commemorate her role in Sun City’s production of The Sound of Music.

Sun City Sunflower Garden Charter Club members are responsible for many of the trees and holiday decorations. The race benefited the Huntley community and Scholarships for Huntley Students. The Very Merry Huntley event was held downtown with a farmer’s market, craft fair, cookie walk, carols, and many other activities. Over 30 members of the Tennis Club joined.

The Foundation has carefully curated baskets that include an enticing assortment of items, ensuring there is something for everyone, according to a press release statement.

Seniors Helping Seniors (SHS) provides non-medical home services to seniors by seniors. Colleen Flaherty, marketing assistant, said, “SHS has a unique peer-to-peer model to caregiving. Seniors connect best with other seniors because of their common life experiences, compassion, and appreciation for the aging process. Seniors who need services, receivers, are carefully matched with seniors who render services, providers, creating mutually rewarding relationships.”

HUNTLEY — Core Huntley, LLC, owner of Lot 4a of Huntley Crossings Phase I, had previously received final PUD (planned Unit Development) approval from the Village Board back in July for a multi-tenant building which included a Noodles and Company restaurant, an unnamed urgent care medical user, and a standalone Chipotle building. Since that time, Core Huntley has reported to trustees that Noodles and Company is scaling back its operations in Illinois and therefore decided to no longer pursue the site. In an unexpected setback, the urgent care user also opted to back out as a tenant.

On November 4, 2023, they celebrated the completion of their Huntley Barndominium with an open house. Family, neighbors, and friends attended the celebration. The weather cooperated, allowing the guests to wander outside for conversation and enjoy the perfect weather. Other guests sat upstairs in the loft and watched while others danced to the familiar music of their youth provided by the band Rick Lindy and the Wild Ones.

Sun City Concert Band is celebrating its 20th anniversary this December with two performances of “A Musical Celebration – 20 Years of Favorites” in Drendel Hall at 7 p.m. December 7 and 1 p.m. December 9.

Bocce Club is one of Sun City’s largest charter clubs, with over 700 members each summer coming Monday through Friday to play bocce. Bocce courts from June to August are filled with residents playing, laughing, and socializing with one another as they all enjoy the famous Italian game. But the club may soon come to an end if no one volunteers to be president or vice president.

A holiday tradition for Sun City Sunflower Garden Club is the House Walk for Charity. This year the event is on December 14, from 1-5 p.m. Sun City residents’ homes, decorated for the holidays, will be open to visitors. This is a ticketed event and may sell out.
