MY SUN DAY NEWS
For the past 6 sessions we have been studying the dangers of sugar. Sugar, as we often think about it, is sucrose and is refined from cane sugar. In 1966, sucrose accounted for 86% of the sweeteners on the market. Prior to 1971, high fructose corn syrup did not even exist as a food additive.
Letters for the week of July 3, 2014.
A Jewish Rabbi and a Catholic Priest met at an annual 4th of July picnic. Old friends, they began their usual banter.
This week in history.
It was nighttime, and the young boy was home alone, his parents working at their delicatessen. What else was there to do but get into a little trouble? Out of the closet came his BB gun, and from the safety of his second-story bedroom, he drew a bead on the streetlight outside the Chicago bungalow where he lived. A carefully placed shot … a satisfying “ping” as the glass shattered … and out it went!
It’s amazing how quickly a situation can make a complete 180. We had just finished planning a bachelor party for a good friend from college. We were going to head to the city, go on a brewery tour, and then catch the Sox game.
The Centegra Hospital-Huntley construction project will officially take root this July, confirming the development of the 360,000 square-foot facility which began in March and is scheduled to conclude in the spring of 2016.
For the past several years since her husband died, Sun Citian Alyce Grundei enjoyed the attention of, and activities with, her three middle-aged sons. One of them even came to live with her on Morning Glory Lane in Neighborhood 15 in recent months.

While Tom Jones might say “It’s Not Unusual” to fall in love, it is rather unusual to find someone with such a strong tribute performance to Jones himself.
Now that the longer, sunnier days of summer mean more fun outdoors, Sun Citians need to become even more vigilant in the care of their skin, our body’s largest organ (20 square feet in area). As seniors, we are at high risk for developing skin cancer on our aged skin’s outer covering of three layers, the epidermis. In fact, over 50% of deaths associated with skin cancer occur in people over the age of 65. Here are some more very disturbing facts on the disease.

Question: I can’t figure out how to change the light in my bathroom. It is a combination light and exhaust fan. The light is behind a white lens that is about eight inches square with the fan grille opening all around it. I can’t get the unit to come down and I can’t get the lens off.
When we take sugar into our bodies, the pancreas secretes insulin. Insulin affects blood pressure, cholesterol, fat in the blood (better known as triglycerides), the arteries, heart disease, obesity, and strokes. It is a major cause of death and disability in America today.
There is a Venetian style restaurant called Mandile’s in Algonquin, but it’s location is perplexing. You can see it as you pass by, but you can’t figure out how to get into it. At least my husband, aka: “Wrong Way Jim,” couldn’t figure it out. Hint: You should pass it by, then turn around and come in from the east. What’s even harder to find is a gondola!
The harsh winter not only affected our evergreen and marginally hardy shrubs but also other outdoor features such as sidewalks and patios. This column addresses maintenance of paved surfaces.
If you love wild and wooly science fiction, with outrageous plots, lots of action, death and destruction, or if you just happen to like Tom Cruise movies, then this might be a three star rating for you.
Quick now, hockey fans, what do George Lewis Rickard, Madison Square Garden, and the New York Rangers ice hockey team have in common? I was looking for a current sports column idea recently, and I came across several pieces of information that, put together, create an interesting and very timely “behind the headlines” story about the New York Rangers, who are playing in the 2014 Stanley Cup finals of the National Hockey League.
According to a report published by the University of Illinois in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Atlantic hurricanes with female names are far more deadly than male-named hurricanes. The researchers are quick to provide a reason for their sexist findings that will keep their scientific eyes from being scratched out. Female hurricanes, they say, are perceived by the public as less threatening, so people are less-prepared.
Q: My father refuses to turn his air conditioning on during the hot weather. I truly worry about him. Can you offer any suggestions on how to approach this?
With the wide variety of insurance and retirement savings plans available to retirees today, there has been an increase in the types of assets that are being passed on to surviving spouses of deceased retirees. The tax implications of some of those inherited assets can be quite significant.

As fall approaches and summer vacation is over, a mother wakes up her son and says it’s the first day of school, so get up and get ready. He says, “Mom, I don’t want to go back. Please don’t make me. I hate school!”
People filed into the Fountain View Room at Prairie Lodge as the clock reached 6:00 on a Tuesday evening, the start of an average practice for the Prairie Singers.
