Harp Twins’ mission to “make the harp rock”

Camille and Kennerly Kitt are the world’s only known identical twin professional harp players. They were trained classically but have arranged modern day songs to be played on the harp.

The sounds of a New Tradition come to Huntley

On Sunday, Aug. 26, at 3 p.m. in Huntley High School’s Performing Arts Center, The New Tradition Chorus will wow audiences with their award winning choral performance. The New Tradition Chorus is a member of The Barbershop Harmony Society, and has gone on to win 19 medals in the International Chorus Contest.

Local radio legend Clark Weber relives the joy in music

On Thursday, July 26 in Drendel Ballroom from 7-8:30 p.m., residents will be teleported back to their youth with radio legend Clark Weber. He worked at the WLS radio station first as a DJ and then as a talk show host. Later in his career, he ran a syndicated one-minute radio show called, “A Senior Moment.”

The Woodchucks are at it again. Community Projects leader Al La Pelusa in tandem with Wal-Mart truck driver Pete Palczynski are crafting smiles and hope into people’s lives through the Wal-Mart Heart program. The program has been around for about fifteen years, and the Woodchucks have been involved for about the past three years.

Going down, anyone?

Grant Jahr of N. 24 recently completed the journey of a lifetime. At 65 he descended to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and lived to tell about it. “I saw people on their way down into the canyon, and I said [to myself] that someday I have to come back [here] and do that,” said Jahr.

Lady liberty

On Friday, March 9, Jenny Riddle, a dramatic book reviewer, portrayed several characters from “Ladies of Liberty” by Cokie Roberts. Riddle has been successfully portraying great people from history for the past ten years. The dramatic book review is essentially a one-woman show.

Doing Life Together

In these trying economic times it’s comforting to know that there are people willing to help their fellow man. Sun City resident Carol Gates of N.14 is one of these Good Samaritans. She is the senior pastor of Living Waters Lutheran Church and is running a lecture series titled, “Doing Life Together.”

Niko’s Lodge offers s’more than just good service

Niko Kanakaris has been in the restaurant business his entire life. His father owned a restaurant in Huntley, and this inspired Kanakaris to strike out on his own. “I loved the business, but I didn’t want to take over the breakfast, lunch, and dinner operation…. I just wanted to have lunch and dinner, or just dinner,” said Kanakaris.

Popular local music group Project 2 serenades Sun City

On January 10, Sun City had the pleasure of being serenaded by an amazing group of performers titled Project 2. This group is comprised of 15 Huntley High School students and was created by Dylan Ladd in 2007. The students sing and dance musical numbers from such grand performances as “The Jersey Boys,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Wicked.”

Sun City goes green

Get ready to mark your calendars for a night you’ll be talking about for years to come. On Monday, January 23, in Drendel Ballroom from 7-8:30 p.m. Sun City will host Dublin’s number one traditional Irish music group, The Irish House Party.

Turn the page … and keep motivated through life

Writing is difficult. For some it is an impossibility. For others it can take a lifetime to master. According to Daniel Levitin, in his book, “This is Your Brain on Music,” it takes 10,000 hours, or about 10 years to become an expert at something. Thus, it is no surprise that Sun City resident JoAnn T. Neis of N.11 has written a well-received novel entitled, “The Other Half of a Broken Heart.”

Signs of the times

The awareness of personal crime, like burglary, is always something in the back of a homeowner’s mind. A quality substitute to a larger police presence is the formation of a Neighborhood Watch. This allows the community to, in effect, police itself. To have a Neighborhood Watch officially sanctioned, resulting in a Neighborhood Watch sign being posted and supported by the police, there are certain guidelines that must be met.

Communication is key

On Friday, November 11, the nation will honor its veterans. The courage and sacrifice that these men and women have shown is a true inspiration for all that call themselves Americans. There are those among us who feel that it is their duty to give back to these brave members of the armed forces.

His honor, a village’s honor

On November 2, a veteran will fly out to Washington D. C. to experience the World War II memorial. That veteran is Al Jordi of Huntley.
