MY SUN DAY NEWS
A friend of mine, who lives in Memphis, TN, and her cousin Dottie, recently visited Ireland. Dottie lives in Savannah, TN, a small town where trips are organized by banks. She has traveled with Peoples Bank for years. The trip started with a bus picking them up in Savannah and after a couple of other stops in Middle Tennessee, they flew out of Nashville to Newark and then to Dublin. This is their story.
My elderly mother recently had a doctor’s appointment that probably could have gone better. My mother is independent and capable, but she tends to downplay her ailments when speaking with the doctor. She does, however, call me to complain about how fast the appointment went. How can I help my mom prepare for her next doctor’s appointment so that she goes into it with greater confidence and competence?
What do we think when we hear the word HERO? Do we see or think of a person in the armed forces, a doctor, nurse, fire fighter, police person, and on and on? The answer would probably be: yes.
Recently, Stingrays member, Pam Reigel, offered her club’s spring auction charity contribution, which included a swim in a downtown historic indoor swimming pool.
The library’s trademark ceiling and fireplace won’t change during renovation says Porsch.
The eight-year-old relationship between the Sun Day Newspaper and the Sun City board of directors and management staff continues to be tense, complicated, and upside down.
There will be a contested election this year to select members of the Sun City board of directors starting in 2020. Two of them are incumbents seeking another term on the seven-member board. One is a former board member seeking to return after a year off. Another is a newcomer.

My sister-in-law went to see a psychic recently, and when she called to report back to me how the meeting went, I had my reservations. After all, there are psychics, and then there are psychics. The fake ones should be put in jail for lying to us about their phony abilities. The real ones should be put in jail for not telling us when an earthquake or tornado is about to hit.

Donna Badame’s home in Neighborhood 27 became solar powered this summer. “I had 14 solar panels installed on the south side of my roof in the middle of June,” Badame said. “They were put in before my birthday. It was a present I bought for myself.”

According to the National Council on Aging statistics, every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall. The council also states that 1 in 3 seniors, about 12 million, fall each year in the United States. More stats reveal that over 1/2 of all falls occur at home.
This year’s Anglers Fishing Derby was a hit with residents, and an even bigger thrill for their grandkids. “It’s so much fun watching them,” said Dan Adelmund. “Our grandson, Jayden, was scared at first, but then proud.”

The Chicago area Six-County Senior Olympic Games proved prosperous for Sun City. Three Sun City Softball teams and two Sun City Volleyball teams headed out to Schaumburg to compete.
For the past couple of months, people in McHenry County were talking about the 50th anniversary of the moon landing probably as much as they were talking about Valley Hi and the Homestead Exemption. For the moon landing, we remembered where we were on July 20, 1969. For the Homestead Exemption tied to surplus funds of the Valley Hi Nursing Home, we probably can’t get quite as excited, though getting a rebate check for $100 to $200 dollars is pretty good.
A good friend of ours, Kathy, invited us to join her and a group friends, for dinner. We jumped at the chance for two reasons. It would be a fun night out, and we found out that, on that particular night, you get 50% off on all appetizers and entrees at the recentley opened Be Bop A Lulu’s Rockabilly Cafe in Union.
This movie has been in the theaters for a while, and certainly some of you may have seen it. I prefer to write about new releases, but as my editor Kelsey O’Kelley put it “I feel that August is one of the months where no good movies come out.” You’re right Kelsey, at least so far, so I chose to “reach back” for this edition.
We have an area in the front of our house where grass doesn’t grow very well. My husband, bless his heart, has tried in vain for 3 years to establish lawn in this area. Inevitably, no matter what he has tried grass seed or sod, this area ended up being bare soil. It was the topic of conversation on a recent Saturday night. Although I could see he was tired and frustrated from working on the project once again, I had to admit, I really never noticed that part of our yard.
In the last issue of this paper I gave some inaccurate information on siding for Sun City homes. I should have researched a little further and not relied on a single source.
I think it’s time for all of us to have a conversation about hiring more help, but I don’t know how to approach the topic. Do you have any tips?
Letters for the week of August 8.

Linda Robinson and her husband, Jim, recently became the first homeowners in Sun City Huntley to have solar panels installed on their roof. “We got the idea a few months ago when our daughter, Nicole, who lives with her husband in Crystal Lake, said they were getting solar panels on their home,” Linda said. “Our son-in-law is an engineer and one of the smartest people I know, so that increased our motivation to follow suit.”

Last week, the elusive Humboldt Park alligator – lovingly nicknamed “Chance the Snapper” – was finally lured back into captivity by the Crocodilian Specialist Services on July 16. It is unclear how the alligator arrived in the Humboldt lagoon, but it inspired a 36-hour vigil of local residents who waited to see the gator emerge.
Like most Americans, whenever I feel a bit anxious and lost, I trust my faith in a higher power — my car’s navigational system. She always seems to get me back on track. I call her “she,” of course, because her voice is female. And I’m glad she’s female, because who wants to put all your faith in some disembodied guy’s voice when you’re lost? We men are idiots when it comes to finding our own way, because we always think we can get there without asking directions. So that directional dashboard dude is probably just as lost as I am and is faking it to preserve his fragile manhood.

Two and a half years ago, the former Huntley Outlet Center died after a long struggle to survive. Now, the opportunity for the Huntley government to decide what happens to the former mall property has been taken away from the village, and given to a McHenry County Circuit Court judge.

The annual Fourth of July festivities held across the nation earlier this month included activities such as parades, hot dog eating contests, and backyard barbecues. The highlight of the holiday for a majority of Americans is the chance to watch fireworks displays at night.

Procrastination is fairly common among taxpayers filing just before the April deadline every year. The government expects to see completed federal tax forms and state tax forms right up to the last minute, but there’s no history of filing early or late for the Valley Hi Rebate.
A Woodstock man has been cited for dangerous driving after officials say he jumped a curb and drove through a local yard.
After seven years of writing this column, we are proud to say we have never repeated a restaurant. That is partially due to the fact that after we review them, for some reason, they go out of business. Was it something we said???
Recently, there was a discussion on the radio regarding the implementation of self-service checkout lanes at Jewel. I listened especially closely because my son is a checker at the Huntley store. The consensus of the discussion seemed to be that shopping at Jewel was more rewarding when the visit ended with interaction with the checkers and baggers.
